CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ JAYANTI

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, also known as Shiv Jayanti, is a festival and public holiday in Maharashtra, India, celebrated on February 19. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. In 2025, Shivaji Jayanti falls on Wednesday, February 19, marking his 395th birth anniversary.

Shivaji Maharaj, born Shivaji Bhosale (1630–1680 C.E.), was a warrior king admired for his leadership, military skills, and advocacy for Swarajya (self-rule). His efforts to free India from foreign rule and his emphasis on good governance have made him a national hero.

Observed primarily in Maharashtra, Shivaji Jayanti is celebrated with processions, cultural events, and discussions about Shivaji's legacy. Schools and institutions often organize plays and speeches to honor his contributions. Public transportation, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and emergency services remain open, while government offices and banks are closed.

The celebration of Shivaji Jayanti began in 1870 after the discovery of his tomb at Raigad Fort. Freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak further elaborated on it to bring Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to public consciousness during India’s struggle for independence.

Although February 19 is widely accepted as the official date, some celebrate Shiv Jayanti according to the Hindu calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, the birth date of Shivaji Maharaj is February 19, while according to the Hindu Calendar, Shivaji was born on the 3rd day of Phalgun.
